PERENNIAL BLOOM AWARD, 2020

Many congratulations to the Garden Club of New Jersey 2020 Perennial Bloom Award recipient, Joan Baker, Spring Lake Garden Club. Joan is an unanimous choice from a group of outstanding candidates submitted from our state.

Joan’s accomplishments abound. Over 60 years she has been an active member of the East Brunswick Garden Club and the Spring Lake Garden Club, of which she is a founding member and a past President. Her mastery of horticulture and floral arranging extend to sharing her knowledge and expertise with young people, her community and fellow gardeners. She serves on the Spring Lake Garden Club Scholarship and Awards committees, is the club’s Historian and its Parliamentarian and she wrote the club’s Constitution and By-Laws. Her presence in her Club and in our State are invaluable examples of the impact of how one person’s love of gardening, lovingly shared can build something of enduring value.

The Perennial Bloom Award is a wonderful way to celebrate those in our Garden Clubs who have contributed and given back so much to our communities year after year. Joan certainly embodies all of these qualities and more. Her application now moves on to CAR-SGC for consideration for the regional Golden Perennial Bloom Award. We are sure they will enjoy getting to know Joan as much as we do!!

CONGRATULATIONS JOAN!!!!👏👏👏👏

CELEBRATING OUR GCNJ CLUB PROJECTS

Kudos to Country Garden Club for their involvement in the Holly Trail House Tour, an important Holiday Community event and fundraising activity in Hunterdon County for the past 50 years. The event raises funds for the Brightside Adult Day Care Facility. This year Country Garden Club, and all of its 18 members, volunteered to decorate a house on the tour. The challenge in decorating each home is that all decorations must be handmade. The Country Garden Club increased the challenge by using only recycled and/or plant-based materials. The home they decorated was an historical home built in 1760 and the decorating needed to be consistent with the age and history of the home.

It was a substantial undertaking for a club with 18 members, who made several hundred handmade ornaments that adorned Christmas trees, table centerpieces, window swags and mantles. Egg cartons were used to make beautiful centerpieces and recycled hangars were used to create the large snowflakes lining the gardens. In total five rooms were decorated. Club members also harvested greens from their own gardens to complement the handmade decorations. See the pictures attached to enjoy this lovely creation.

When I asked how such a small club could accomplish such an outstanding endeavor, President Michele Liana told me, “ Well, this was an important event in our community that raised monies for a very worthy cause. Sadly, this will be the last year that the County will host this tour and we wanted to be a part of this final tour.”

Again, congratulations to Country Garden Club and their members!!
Providing beauty, creatively presented and giving back to our communities are values for which the Garden Club of New Jersey proudly stands. This project clearly embodies all of these values!!
