Gardening Notes for December 2022

December 1, 2022 By Bruce Crawford

Gardening Notes for December 2022The hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season is finally upon us! The fall provided ample moisture, minimizing worries of watering newly installed plants this winter. Although there were frosts in the north, the temperatures remained reasonably warm, sparing many tender plants. The chilly temps and sunshine providing good conditions for great fall color too. This is the time to properly prepare the garden for winter as autumn truly bids us farewell and the sub-freezing temperatures of winter are just around the corner. As time permits between baking and ‘online’ shopping, continue your ledgers with notes on the weather and how plants are performing. Wishing everyone a very Happy and Merry Holiday Season!

December Plant of the Month – Sansevieria

December 1, 2022 By Bruce Crawford

Plant of the Month Dec 2022A Holiday Plant for Many Seasons to Come
Each December I enjoy highlighting those plants appropriate for the Holiday season that are less frequently considered as season appropriate! Obviously, the Poinsettia is the plant of preference for adorning many homes during this season. I love the colorful display that Poinsettias provide, but I always reflect on a comment a client retorted when I gifted her a plant – “Oh no, I really do not want another Poinsettia I am going to kill.” The more I thought about her comment, the more I realized it was true. Wouldn’t it be nice to receive a plant that would live not for one season, but for many to come?

Gardening Notes for November 2022

November 4, 2022 By Bruce Crawford

Flower picture for Gardening Notes CrawfordNovember is here. The cool nights combined with the ample rainfall in October has allowed our trees to erupt into a bonanza of spectacular colors. In addition, the soil is adequately moist to bring plants safely into the start of winter without the worry of drought. The light frosts of October have started to impact our annuals but very soon, they will need to be removed with the onset of colder weather. Even though the weather is becoming cooler, there is still much to do in the Garden before it can be put to bed for winter!

November Plant of the Month – Itea

November 4, 2022 By Bruce Crawford

IteaItea – A Plant in Need of Rediscovery
It is rare for a low maintenance shrub, capable of providing the garden with close to four seasons of interest to be an uncommon plant in the home landscape. Oddly, this is the fate of Virginia Sweetspire and it was not until the late 1980’s that this plant began to gain limited recognition. Indeed, our native Sweetspire, botanically named Itea virginica, seemingly appears to be a ‘late bloomer’ to the gardening world, yet it was a well admired plant in the 1700’s. It appears to have become lost in the wave of new introductions and is a plant in need of rediscovery!

Gardening Notes for October 2022

October 1, 2022 By Bruce Crawford

October gardening notes flower imageOctober marks the true start of autumn and much work for the gardener! We are now racing against time to complete our chores before that first strong frost. September was a fairly dry month, so watering chores are certainly high on the list! Always remember to take a moment and make some notes about your garden. Among other details, take note of what annuals are still looking respectable, which late season vegetables are living up to expectations, and perhaps what woody plants or perennials should be added to enhance the autumn garden for next year!
